Eunoia is the first skincare brand formulated at the (average) pH of healthy skin and contains no added preservatives or sensitizing ingredients.  It is also based around containing the highest concentration of active skin-identical ingredients, including bio-ferments, lipids, pre-biotics and components of the skins own natural moisturization factor (NMF), that can work with the skins to support its inbuilt repair mechanisms.

The pH of the skin surface is a significant factor in the overall health of the skin. For all the chemical reactions within the layers of the dermis and epidermis to properly progress, several factors, including the pH, water-holding capacity, and correct percentages of lipids, must be appropriately maintained. The skin has inbuilt mechanisms to preserve the delicate balance of these factors but can be disrupted or adversely affected by anything that comes into contact with the skin, including skincare and haircare products.

Fermented products are produced when bacteria are grown on a nutrient-rich food source.  The bacteria in the resulting broth are then destroyed when the cell wall is broken so that the cell wall and cytoplasm are kept in the solution.  This is referred to as a lysate and serves as a probiotic nutritional source for the resident, helpful bacteria that naturally colonize healthy skin.  This helps reduce inflammation within the skin in the same way that has been shown by taking oral probiotic strains.  Clinical studies have already reported that topical probiotics are capable of exerting skin health effects such as improving eczema, atopic dermatitis, healing of burns and scars, rejuvenating the skin and improving the skin's innate immunity.

Ceramides are lipids (oils) naturally found in the stratum corneum, the outermost skin layer, which is composed of flattened layers of dead skin cells and acts act as a protective barrier against water loss, environmental pollutants, and UV radiation. Ceramides are the major structural components of the epidermal permeability barrier.  The main function of ceramides within the skin is to control the growth and differentiation of cells when they are in the process of becoming specialized.  This structure of the skin is often referred to as "brick and mortar", with the bricks being dead cornified cells and the mortar being the intracellular matrix composed of the lipid mixture. The lipids are maintained at an acidic pH level to create an inhospitable environment for harmful microorganisms. Any disruption to this barrier can lead to a breakdown in the defences of the skin, stimulating the immune system and causing dry, irritated skin or dermatitis.  There are five different ceramides present in the skin, all of which are included in an optimal ratio in all Eunoia products.

The symptoms of dry, damaged, or sensitive skin can be improved by increasing the hydration levels of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) by replenishing the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). These are the water-soluble components like free amino acids, organic acids, urea, and inorganic ions that determine the skin's water-holding properties. NMF's are efficient humectants, attracting moisture and playing an essential role in maintaining the stratum corneum's physical properties, allowing the skin to function optimally. Dry and damaged skin is no longer able to produce NMF's and an abnormality in this pathway is thought to be responsible for causing atopic dermatitis. Thankfully, the skin can benefit greatly from the topical application of these skin-identical components.

Eunoia products contain several key components of the NMF. The skin is constantly regenerating and replenishing these components, but this process decreases as we age. By adding NMF components into your skincare routine, the skins protective barrier is strengthened, signs of aging are diminished, the skin is hydrated, less prone to irritation and is healthier.

We have been able to use 'hurdle technology' to create an irritating preservative-free line of skincare that is safe for everyone to use.  Our products have been tested and found to be safe, able to prevent unwanted contamination, still and effective for all skin types, including those with acnegenic, dermatitis or sensitive skin conditions.

Live bacterial strains are beneficial for the skin, but studies have shown that equally the lysed cell components that are non-living and non-replicating are also able to elicit beneficial immune responses and improve the skin barrier function leading to an improvement in skin health.  This is especially beneficial when it comes to skincare because it allows for greater shelf-life, stability and flexibility in storage temperatures when live cells are not present.

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide found in nearly every cell of the body.  It has a skin-supporting function in the dermis, maintains epidermal barrier function, immobilizes water in tissues, influences cell proliferation and differentiation, and plays an essential role in wound healing and inflammatory responses.  The skin utilizes almost 50% of the body’s hyaluronic acid.

Lactic acid a component of the NMF, with antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms that helps the skin regulate the turnover of dead skin cells.

Acetic acid an antibacterial compound used in the treatment of burns and infections.

Diacetyl is an antibacterial agent that is effective against common skin pathogens S. aureus, E. coli
